About the SSO
The Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra is made up of 70 local musicians with a professional conductor and leader. We are set up as a charity with registered number 1057071 and our aim is to make live orchestral music available locally.
Our three subscription concerts each season focus particularly on 19th and 20th century masterpieces which are attractive and enjoyable for our audiences, and at the same time interesting and challenging for us as players. In addition we present our very popular Family Concerts in October and a Taste of Classics concert in the New Year, a short mid-week concert with complimentary glass of wine.
Most of our concerts take place in the Stag Sevenoaks, our local theatre. We rehearse each Wednesday from 8-10.15pm at Sevenoaks Primary School. If you are an instrumentalist thinking of joining the orchestra, please use the Contact us page
Our Conductor
Darrell Davison won the Barbirolli Conducting Prize in 1979, since when he has conducted all the major London orchestras and recorded with the BBC and London Symphony Orchestras.
As a composer, he has had works performed by the Philharmonia and London Philharmonic Orchestras and has written and orchestrated film scores for the LSO.
Darrell has now been at the helm of the SSO for forty years, and under his guidance we have tackled increasingly ambitious programmes which have been warmly received.
Our Leader
Catherine might have given up the violin if she had not been inspired and encouraged by Darrell's
father, Arthur Davison, who conducted her youth orchestra. Originally training to be a pianist, she went on
to work as a violinist in Caracas and then in two orchestras for the BBC.
She currently enjoys leading not only here in Sevenoaks, but also orchestras in Croydon and Cambridge. She is a member of the English National Ballet Philharmonic. Catherine also works as a Consultant trauma psychotherapist.
