Elgar 'Cello Concerto
12th March 2023, 15:00
Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra presents one of the world’s best-loved concertos by one of England’s best-loved composers.
The Elgar Cello Concerto, Elgar’s last notable work, is a cornerstone of the solo cello repertoire. Composed in the aftermath of the First World War, its haunting opening line and soaring melodies have caught the imagination of the greatest cellists. Jamal Aliyev is no exception. This young Turkish cellist has been lauded as “one of the greatest cellists of his generation” and he is captivating audiences around the globe. In high demand, this is a rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s finest rising artists in the intimacy of the Stag Theatre.
Tchaikovsky’s striking 5th Symphony is somewhat eclipsed in popularity by the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies but holds a prominent place within the composer’s impressive output. It was most notably performed on the night of October 20, 1941 in London’s Philharmonic Hall and broadcast live. As the second movement began, bombs started to fall nearby, but the orchestra continued playing until the final note. Listeners often feel it springs from a dark, spiritual experience and it continues to move audiences today.
One of Beethoven’s lesser-known overtures, Consecration of the House, was commissioned to open Vienna’s new theatre, and was first performed in 1822. It was the first work Beethoven wrote after his revival of studying the works of J. S. Bach and Handel, and the work bears their influence.
We look forward to sharing this excellent programme with you at the Stag Theatre.
