Concert of English music with Sevenoaks Philharmonic
28th June 2025, 19:30
Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra are pleased to combine again with Sevenoaks Philharmonic Choir for another joint concert at Stag Theatre at the opening of Sevenoaks Summer Festival.
The Orchestra will open the concert with Bax’s Tintagel Overture, which was inspired by walks along the rugged coast of north Cornwall in the summer of 1917. Bax wrote that “the intention is simply to offer a tonal impression of the castle-crowned cliff of Tintagel, and more especially of the long distances of the Atlantic as seen from the cliffs on a sunny but not windless day”.
The remainder of the concert is dedicated to the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and features both the sublime The Lark Ascending, featuring violinist Elizaveta Saul, and his first large-scale choral work – A Sea Symphony.
Whilst The Lark Ascending presents the hauntingly beautiful theme against a musical description of the bucolic English countryside, A Sea Symphony describes musically the full range of sea states with the Orchestra Choir and Baritone and Soprano soloists delivering a symphonic treatment of the words of Walt Whitman.
Tickets will be on sale via The Stag website at least eight weeks before the concert.
