Orchestral Concert: 3pm - 26-02-2012
In our first concert of 2012 we will play two masterpieces, both popular, but very different, and preface them with something not so well known.
- Berlioz: Grand Overture - Waverley
- Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D, Op 35
- Sibelius: Valse Triste
- Sibelius: Symphony No 5 in E flat, Op 82
The opening work, one of several concert overtures which Berlioz wrote, and his first published orchestral composition, was inspired by Sir Walter Scott's Waverley, often regarded as the first historical novel.
Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto presents the performer with some considerable challenges, but it is a mark of how times have changed that, after being roundly criticised when it first appeared, it is now in the repertoire of all young soloists, and has become one of the most popular works in the canon. Our soloist will be the young Japanese violinist Yuka Ishizuka, recipient of many prizes, and who has already played in several international festivals.
We will follow this with one of Sibelius's shortest and most popular works, before concluding our opening concert the fifth of the seven symphonies he wrote. Composed in his unmistakable style, this powerful piece has one of the most original of symphonic endings, in which a most important element is - silence.
