Kodaly: Háry János Suite
Davison: Four Elegiac Portraits for Cello & Orchestra (soloist Jérémie Maillard)
Delius: La Calinda
Elgar: Enigma Variations

The third subscription concert in our 2010 season celebrates a landmark year for our conductor, Darrell Davison. It will contain a number of musical portraits, including the famous Enigma Variations of Edward Elgar and a tribute by Darrell Davison to four famous cellists..

The concert will start with the Háry János Suite by Zoltan Kodaly, an orchestral suite from his opera of the same name.

This will be followed by Four Elegaic Portraits for Cello and Orchestra by Darrell Davison, in which each of the movements is inspired by an eminent cellist. It will be exciting to see Davison, in his 30th year with the SSO, conducting his own music. The soloist will be the young French cellist Jérémie Maillard, who gave the work's first performance.

After Delius' beautiful but less well-known dance La Calinda from the opera Koanga, the final work will be Elgar's Enigma Variations. These variations each depict one of Elgar's friends and they will be presented at this concert by a narrator.
