Orchestral Concert - 7.30pm - 23-02-2008

This Symphony Concert will be dedicated to the memory of David Musgrave, one-time member of the orchestra, and long-time supporter during his time as Director of our long-time sponsor, Marley Ltd.

The concert, which will take place in St. Nicholas's Church, will open with Smetana's popular tone poem Vltava, one of six which make up Ma Vlast (My Country). It is a musical portrait of the Czech Republic's longest river.

Brahm's majestic Violin Concerto in D, Op 77, was written for Joseph Joachim. As well as a wonderful violin part it has in the slow movement one of the most beautiful oboe solos in the orchestral repertoire. The work was a particular favourite of David's. As soloist we will be welcoming back Naoko Myamoto, who in our February 2007 concert gave a memorable performance of the Bruch G minor concerto.

The concert will finish with Sibelius's powerful First Symphony, in E minor, Op 39, which has further wonderful solos for the orchestral wind players.
